Helping Native Communities Create New Speakers

The Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival (aka AICLS) was established as a statewide organization with the mission of convening individual fluent speakers with an apprentice. This process called the Master-Apprentice Program (https://aicls.org/programs/https-aicls-org-wp-content-uploads-2020-01-aicls-master-apprentice-program-invoice-2020-pdf/) has since enabled many young apprentices to acquire their ancestral languages. The program’s direct approach and positive results has been recognized by indigenous language programs throughout California, the USA, Canada and abroad. The handbook that presents the Master-Apprentice was recently translated and is now available for the Sami People in the European Arctic, along with Russian.

AICLS was established 1992. 7 teams were selected to initiate the then-new Master-Apprentice process. It has been a no-look-back proposition ever since.
