Northern California’s Tori McConnell Crowned Miss Indian World 2023
Tori McConnell, Yurok tribal member and Karuk tribal descendant, won the title of Miss Indian World 2023 at the Gathering of Nations Pow-wow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is a Karuk language apprentice working with Julian Lang, master speaker and teacher. She is the child of Jeff and Tammy McConnell and the grand-daughter of Mike McConnell and Patricia Markussen (on her paternal side) and Earlene and Butch Gentry (on her maternal side); the great grand-daughter of Ardeth McConnell (paternal) and Ira Stevens (maternal).
Indigenous languages, and specifically her ancestral Karuk language, are important to her. She is currently an apprentice working under Julian Lang, Karuk master speaker. Culture, ceremony, and the lands of the Yurok and Karuk peoples together help her be who she is today.
